Non-Toxic Baby Carriers, Wraps & Ring Slings
Your baby rests against a carrier's fabric for hours, often mouthing the straps. These natural-fiber wraps, linen ring slings and organic cotton and hemp carriers cover the newborn months through toddlerhood, with CPSC safe-positioning tips.

What to Avoid
- Bag-style slings that hold a baby curled chin-to-chest. CPSC warns this position can restrict the airway, especially for babies under 4 months
- Covering your baby's face with fabric. CPSC says the face should be uncovered and visible to the wearer at all times
- Secondhand carriers with worn stitching, frayed webbing or cracked buckles. Check every part before each use
- Carriers with no stated weight range, or ones that don't keep the knees higher than the bottom in an "M" position
- Using any carrier while cooking, drinking hot liquids or riding a bike

Our Picks
Stretchy Newborn Wraps
A bulky structured carrier for the first months
Stretchy wraps hug a newborn close for naps and fussy evenings. Solly's wrap is 100% TENCEL Modal for babies 8–25 lbs, and Solly says it meets U.S. CPSC safety requirements. Boba's Classic Wrap is a cotton-blend knit, and both brands say their wraps are acknowledged as hip-healthy by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute.
Solly Baby Wrap: 100% TENCEL Modal, about 5.5 yards, 8–25 lbs; Boba Classic: 95% cotton French terry blend, from 7 lbs; Ergobaby Aura: 4-way stretch, machine washable; Tula Wrap: Tencel
Why we picked it: Soft cotton and TENCEL-based fabrics breathe well against a newborn's skin, and a well-tied wrap holds baby high and close enough to kiss, which makes it easy to keep their airway clear.

Linen Ring Slings
Carrying a baby on one arm all day
Ring slings are fast for quick ups and downs, and they work well for hip carries with older babies. Sakura Bloom's Basics slings are soft linen, hand-dyed in LA. Boba's ring sling uses a linen and bamboo viscose blend.
Sakura Bloom Basics: linen, gold hardware, made in California; Boba Linen Ring Sling: linen and bamboo viscose blend; adjust through the rings for a custom fit each time
Why we picked it: Linen is a breathable natural fiber that softens with washing, so it's comfortable in warm weather and has no synthetic coating.

Organic Cotton, Linen and Hemp Buckle Carriers
Polyester mesh carriers for everyday use
Buckle carriers spread the weight across your hips and shoulders for longer walks. The Boba X Organic is 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton and adjusts for babies 7–45 lbs, per Boba. Boba also makes a linen Boba X, and Tula offers its Explore in linen and hemp.
Boba X: 0–36+ months, 7–45 lbs, adjustable width and height; Tula Explore: linen and hemp options, multiple carry positions; check each model's weight range
Why we picked it: GOTS covers organic fiber content and restricts harsh processing chemicals. That matters for a fabric your baby chews on, and linen and hemp are breathable natural fibers.

Everyday Ergonomic Buckle Carriers
A carrier that only works for a few months
When you want one carrier that grows with your child, Ergobaby's Omni Classic has four positions for babies up to 48 months, and the Embrace is a soft, newborn-ready carrier with no insert needed. Tula's Explore comes in breathable mesh.
Ergobaby Omni Classic: 4 positions, adjustable seat, lumbar support; Ergobaby Embrace: first 12 months, inward and outward facing; Ergobaby Aerloom: FormaKnit fabric; Tula Explore Mesh: multiple positions
Why we picked it: An adjustable seat that keeps knees higher than the bottom in an "M" position supports healthy hip development, and buckles make it easy for any caregiver to use.

Toddler Hip Carriers
Carrying a toddler on one hip all afternoon
Toddlers want up, then down, then up again. Boba's Buddy side sling and Ergobaby's Alta and Lift hip seats make quick hip carries easier on your back, and Tula's Kid Carrier fits bigger kids in a full buckle carrier.
Boba Buddy: toddler side sling; Ergobaby Alta: 2-in-1 hip seat and carrier; Ergobaby Lift: multi-position hip seat with storage; Tula Kid Carrier: linen option; check each one's weight limits
Why we picked it: A hip seat or toddler sling takes the weight off one arm and shoulder, so short carries through stores, airports and parking lots are easier.

Safe Babywearing Checklist
- Keep your baby's face uncovered and visible to you at all times, with nothing blocking the nose and mouth. CPSC sling safety →
- Keep baby's chin off their chest. A curled, chin-to-chest position can restrict the airway, especially under 4 months.
- Check on your baby often. If nursing in a carrier, reposition afterward so baby's head is up and clear of fabric and your body.
- Preemies, twins, low-birth-weight babies and babies with breathing problems need extra care. CPSC suggests talking to your pediatrician before using a sling. AAP on baby carriers →
- Check buckles, rings, snaps and stitching before each use, and follow the weight range on the label.
FAQs
What is the safest baby carrier for a newborn?
Any carrier rated for newborns can be used safely if it's worn correctly: baby upright, face visible, chin off the chest, and close enough to kiss. CPSC advises extra caution with sling-style carriers for babies under 4 months. Many parents start with a stretchy wrap or a newborn-ready buckle carrier like the Ergobaby Embrace.
Are organic cotton carriers worth it?
Babies spend a lot of time with their face against the carrier and often chew on the straps. A GOTS-certified organic cotton carrier, like the Boba X Organic, means the fiber is certified organic and its processing is restricted to approved chemicals. Linen and hemp are other natural-fiber options.
What does hip-healthy mean for a baby carrier?
It means the carrier supports your baby's thighs, with knees at or above bottom height in an "M" or spread-squat position, instead of letting the legs hang straight down. The International Hip Dysplasia Institute acknowledges carriers that meet its criteria. Solly Baby and Boba state this for their wraps.
When can my baby face outward in a carrier?
Follow your carrier's instructions. Outward-facing positions are generally for babies who have steady head and neck control, and each brand sets its own minimum. Ergobaby's Omni Classic and Embrace both include an outward-facing position.
